The teaser trailer for whiplash is 31 seconds long which is conforming to the trailer type. It has a very fast tempo, consisting of short takes jump cutting to the next. It starts with a fast jazz track with a montage of different jazz related shots. Including a voice over from the main character, so immediately the audience knows he is the protagonist. At 7 seconds the music stops for a brief dialogue followed by tense, dramatic music. Through this the audience can infer jazz is a central theme to the plot but it has a sinister twist. There is one shot where different film festivals are displayed. There are also short one sentence reviews displayed in between shots. Overall the teaser gave a sense of what the film could be about whilst still keeping it ambiguous.
The theatrical trailer is 2 minutes 7 seconds long. This is typical of a theatrical trailer. It consists of longer shots from the film with jump cuts. The two main characters are established clearly with their personalities coming through a lot more than the teaser trailer. The plot becomes a lot more clear as well. Whilst having longer shots it still maintains the fast tempo especially towards the end of the trailer when the drum beat is increasing in tempo. This reflects the fast, intense atmosphere of the film.Important scenes in the film are shown especially the scene shown in the picture below. This scene is the longest one shown in the trailer and is a very important one within the film.
